Default 1997 850 ball joint - pricing question

Hi all,

My car was due for an inspection, and the mechanic tells me that it needs a new lower control arm

So far the quote has been for $318 for the part, 1 hour labor, and an alignment for a total of $470 plus tax.

A quick Google search shows that the parts can be had for $150. So am I insane or is this ridiculously over priced?

Any thoughts are welcome!!

You didn't say if this was at a dealer, or volvo indy, or other (franchise auto shop) kind of shop.

Parts are not parts; especially when it comes front end equipment. There's a lot of aftermkt junk out there. That being said, I am sure you can do better than $318 for one LCA. But if you took it to a dealer, that's probably about right, since they will use authentic volvo OEM parts and they will charge you through the nose..

Actually you're right, a quick search at FCP found your LCA for $150, and it's the original volvo part too. So buy and put it in yourself, then take it in for an alignment; you'll save almost $300!

Hi Gdog.

This is an independent auto shop.

but thank you so much for the reply, and the info - especially the link.

Its good to have the "red flag" I got verified. Why pay more?

They are not that hard to instal either. I have done it myself. It's not the easiest job I have ever done, but not the hardest either. Just be careful.

You can get REPOP arms for less and def. install yourself. Most dealers today are not making ANY MONEY selling cars. That's not our fault so don't get stuck with their bill.

Either take it to an indy (with the parts) or do it yourself. A local guy with the correct tools and a lift (and half a brain in his head) should be able to do it pretty quick.

IMHO do BOTH sides since once one goes the other is not far behind.
