850 Ball joint clamp bolt removal question
Dear All,
Hi, I'm writing from Chicago in regard to a question I have about servicing my car.
Here's the 850 I have:
1994 850 Turbo T5 Sedan, automatic transmission, has 140,000 plus miles.
My car has a replaceable front suspension ball joint (attached to the control arm with 3 nuts), and I tried to remove the original unit. I managed to remove the 3 attaching nuts and the clamp nut, but the clamp bolt wouldn't come out no matter what I did. The bolt head is already stripped, and I hit it from the thread-end side with a hammer. It did not want to come out. I then used a chisel & a hammer between the bolt flange and the nuckle, but it did not do any good either.
I believe the clamp bolt is not threaded to the steering nuckle, as it is held by a nut. However, it felt as though it was not a removable bolt, it felt like it was welded onto the nuckle. My last resort would be to use a portable torch and heat it up, but if someone knows more effective method or has had run into the same problem, I appreciate if you could share with me your expertise.
Thanks,
JPN

RE: 850 Ball joint clamp bolt removal question
Dear Mr. Tech,
Thank you very much for taking time to reply, I really appreciate your comment. I'll try the heating method and hopefully I can drive out the bolt, as it is the only thing that's preventing me from installing the new ball joint.
Best regards,
JPN
