1996 Volvo 850 GLT non-turbo a/c come on and sometimes within ten minute cycles off. I have checked the freon and the system is fully charged. When it's on, it definitely cold. Sometimes it will stay on for hours without cycling off. Turn the car off and it come completely back on as usual.??????????

 

Sounds like the compressor needs to be reshimmed.

You know, my car had these exact symptoms when I first purchased it. AC would work perfectly sometimes; other times it would shut off for no reason.

When it happened to me, the light behind the snowflake switch would go out (does yours do this?). Turned out to be bad (high resistance) switch itself (snowflake switch in dash).

I would make sure that's it before you buy a new one; seem to remember it was quite expensive from the dealer. I ended up taking it apart, cleaning it, and put it back together (very tricky, lots of tiny springs!) but it's been working fine since (several years now).
