Default 850 chokes

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 sedan that chokes when I turn the ignition off. Takes a few seconds - engine shakes some, and then the engine shuts off. Not sure what this might be - thoughts??

Have you had and service work done lately?
How many miles?
Timing belt ever replaced?

Had the car serviced a few weeks back. Mentioned the problem to the mechanic. He didn't seem to think much of the problem. But the car sputters and spits as it were, when shut off. He said that I could try the highest octane gas possible - 95 octane. Even though the car's manual calls for just the regular octane rating of 87. I was told in Sweeden, the octane level for the car is even higher than what we can buy here in Canada.

Had the timing belt changed around 96,000Kms (about 60,000 Miles) and the milage is now at 145,000Kms (90,000 Miles).
I wonder if the problem is related to fuel pump pressure.
