headlight wiper won't come off
For all you guys down south (including Mr. Tech), I hope you can help me. You see, I have the winter package on my 850 GLT, and one of the wiper motors is broken. I can see how to get the motor off, but I have to get the wiper off first, and I can't. THere is a spline holding it on, but I am not sure how to get it off. Can someone help?
the driver's side, and no, I haven't lifted the cover to expose the nut. I'll try that. Now do you mean that the plastic housing is what covers the screw? And, does it just snap off?
The cover lifts and kind of swivels towards the arm.You have the easy side to do.You will have to remove the battery and the battery tray. Then there is Torx-25 screws that hold the motor in.
You should not have to.You can if you want to it just pulls off.The screws go from inside the engine compartment towards the front of the car.You might want to use a mirror with a flashlight to look first so you know where the screws are.
Yes!!! the cap just swiveled off of the front, and I was able to get the screw off. I did, however, have to take the front cover off of the car, because the bolts for the motor were in under there, and not in the engine compartment. So, I took it off, and I took off the back cover to find that the gears had come loose. I think it had something to do with the back cover itself. It was slightly broken -the tabs that is- and so, I continued to put the gears together. I will test the motor tomorrow before I put the cover back on. I'm really not sure how to work the headlight wipers, so maybe someone could let me know. Anyway, if the motor is still working, then I will find some way of putting the back cover on, and maybe some kind of clips to hold the back cover on completely, so as that the gears do not come loose again. Somehow I thought that that was the problem to begin with. I knew that the shaft holding the wiper was loose, or much looser than the other one, so I had a good idea that it was just loose. Anyway... any ideas on how to hold it back together, and how to run the wipers?
Sorry I have never repaired the wiper motors.I have always replaced them.
To get the headlight wipers to work pull on the windsheild washers and they will turn on.

Okay, check this out. I took the motor off, and took the back cover off. That wasn't easy... I broke a few tabs off... anyway, I took it apart, and come to find out, the gears had fallen off. So, I plugged it in, set it up on the battery so that I could see it from the driver's door, and pushed the button. Well, only the passenger motor worked, still! So, I completely disconnected the motor, and started to check it with a multimeter. I found that the actual motor inside was still good. I continued to take it apart, and I noticed that the top gear that connects with the top metal plate was binding (you can't miss it, it's the only metal plate after you pull off the plastic cover). So, I ground down some of the I.D. of the plate, so that the gear could work with less resistance. I then began to check the connections. The main connection inside the housing was not making good contact with the rest of the system. So, I tried to bend it back, but it seemed to not want to be bent back, so as to make contact. I tried to pull it out, but I couldn't. So, I began to take other measures. I took and drilled a hole in the outside of the housing, right next to the wires, and low enough to be in line with the bottom leg of the main connector. I then continued to put a screw into the hole. I screwed the screw into the hole until it made enough connection with the wire so that it made good contact with the circuit. I tried it, and I had put the screw in too much, because it was constantly making contact. Well, let me backtrack. There is a little mechanism that moves with the gears, another gear so to speak, that disconnects the circuit, and cut off the relay so that the motor stops. Well, since I put the screw in too far, the contact never was broken, and the motor continued to turn constantly. I adjusted the screw back, and the motor worked perfectly. I put the back cover on, and with the tabs that broke, I took some plastic/sheet metal screws, and held the housing and cover together, so that the seal was in good contact, and shot these screws inbetween the housing, and cover. The screws need to be small enough so as to not break the plastic, but large enough to hold some of the thread. Anyway, I put the screws in between the little holes where the tabs go. If you look at one, you'll see what I'm talking about. Anyway, sorry for the long message, but if you want to save a good $150, then for an hours work, you can salvage an old motor.
