Default 850 Lower control arm Procedure

Hi,

Has anyone got a procedure for replacing the lower control arms on a 95 850?

Thanks,

Default RE: 850 Lower control arm Procedure

Hi Paul,

Here's a procedure:

1. Jack up the front and put it on jackstands. Ensure that the car is solidly rested on jackstands by shaking it. It should feel solid.
2. Remove wheel.
3. Remove ball joint clamp bolt & nut (this was the hardest part for me, I had to use PB Blaster, a propane torch, a chisel & hammer).
4. Separate ball joint from the knuckle.
5. Remove 2 bolts & nuts at the control arm to subframe attachment. This shouldn't be difficult.
6. Done. If you can't take the control arm off the subframe with all fasteners removed, use a soft-face hammer and tap on it; this should dislodge the control arm.
7. Replace all lock nuts with new ones.

Good luck & be safe.

EDIT: The 850 uses either aluminum or steel control arm, depending on the model year/VIN. If aluminum, do not apply too much force/impact, as it can permanently damage the control arm. Aluminum control arm should have replaceable ball joints, while steel control arm has integral ball joint, I believe.

Default RE: 850 Lower control arm Procedure

In a '98 V70 AWD, I would like to know if there is anything modified from the above procedure for an 850. In no. 5, there seem to be 4 bolts attached to subframe per arm and they look to be very difficult to get to.
Thanks,

Everything else is the same. The 4 bolts per side are on the newer cars. Try to use a thin offset wrench and you should be fine.
