850 R Burning Oil out of Exhaust.
Well got a stummper for all the smart ones out there. My 850R has 132,000 miles on it. I have been doing alot of maintence items slowly to bring it up to stage 0. Once in a while it will start burning oil through the exhaust but not all the time. It has a brand new PCV kit on it. Compression was great on all cylinders. Passed smog no problem. When i put the Intake System on it I noticed alot of oil buildup inside the turbo housing on the intake side almost like a small puddle inside of it ? Could this be related to the burning oil ? If so are there any tests I could do to verify its the turbo needing a rebuild ?
Thanks !!!
Thanks !!!

You said it burns oil through the exhaust but not all the time. Is there anything that is repeatable when it does burn, wide open throttle, downhill throttle closed or ....... ?? Can you see it in the exhaust and how much oil are you going through?
How many miles ago did you do the PCV/Oil separator replacement?
If you saw oil did you clean it out? Did you remove the intake hoses and clean them ALL out? The hose at the bottom of the intercooler can pool oil or antifreeze if you have a leak upstream of it. It can also pool condensation so if you see a bit of thin liquid there is a chance of that.
Did you clean out the PTC valve and if you pulled that intake hose (turbo to air filter) did it look like oil was on the walls from the PTC to the turbo?
Sorry for all the questions. It's possible you have a intake valve stem seal going bad and it's sucking oil in along the guide. You would still have normal compression as it would leak with the valve open and vacuum (the intake down stroke) applied to the guide?
You might want to check the throttle body to see if the throttle plate is oily. Clean it, run it and check it again. If it gets oily again after cleaning and you've cleaned the PTC and the intake tubes it pretty much has to be something in the intake. Hopefully it isn't a seal in the turbo.

When I did the PCV i also did the intake and silicone Hoses at the same time, and yes I cleaned the PTC at the same time. Everything has maybe 6,000 miles on the new stuff. It usually only lasts maybe a few miles of driving and then stops, no blue smoke on start-up that I have seen I might add maybe a quart between oil changes of 3,000 miles ? Just embarssing having such a sweet ride but blowing blue smoke out the rear !!!!!!
It's odd because usually it will give you a bit of blue smoke on start up and then for a few seconds or a minute or two depending on how much oil had leaked past the guides when it's shut off and sat.
There is a chance you have an oil leak in the turbine shaft seal of the turbo and it leaks while cold but seals back up once it warms up some and closes the tolerances ?? It wouldn't smoke at first because the exhaust side of the turbo and pipes wouldn't be hot enough to vaporize the oil when first started and would need a mile or two of driving to build up some heat.

I can't think of a test for it other than doing a visual inspection. On the Volvo it's more difficult as I'm used to just pulling off the sheet metal valve cover and seeing if the seals looked cracked or loose. If you pull the intake or exhaust you should be able to see the valve and if it's been leaking for a time it should have some oil build up (caked) on the underside of the valve.
Stole the picture off a different site

So if I pull the intake manifold off should I be able to see something worthwhile (as far as the pictures goes you attached) with the valves ? If everything looks spotless then would you lean more towards turbo rebuild or re-checking the PCV system ?
Pretty much. If it's been smoking a little here and there for a month or more it should have left a trail onto the valve.
I'd pull an intake tube off just to see if you have one that's oily inside. Since they are new and you did the PCV there shouldn't really be any oil in there. If a seal on the turbo is going it could leak into the intake or exhaust.
Give it a day or two and see if anyone else jumps in with an idea.
