Default 850 T5/R advices

hey!

well i just found your forum and already have a few quesions, i sold my 740 gle last week and am now looking for a new car and thought about a 850 T5 or the newer 850 R all as a station wagon but if i dont find one i sedan will do it too.

why a 850 T5/R is because i dont have that much money i could probably get together about 6000 usd, for that price you get one in sweden

i am just a little bit worried about the costs that come later on specially insurrance and so on, i would use the car mostly for daily use driving to work.
Is it really a every day car in the T5/R version? does it take much fuel? i mean im not goint race there but from time to time push it a little bit-----

Model year i thought most about was 1995/1996 with about 180k-200k kilometers on it, full service book included(in most of them)

About insurance i turn 20 next year and had my licens for 2 years, no crashes speeding or anything like that.

would appreciate any help i could get.....thougt about getting a golf vr6 before but volvo does have awesome engines tho........

95 is the only year they made the actual T5R. In 96 and 97 it was called the 850 R and the regular Turbo was called the T5. In 94 and 95 the regular Turbo was the 850 Turbo. As far as I know the gas mileage is the same, but the Turbo or T5/R and much faster and more fun to drive. I don't know about insurance.

In my signature you will see a 97 850 R and 98 V70 GLT. The GLT has a low pressure turbo, but is not referred to as a Turbo model. That's the one my wife drives. Remember the 98 V/S70 is basically the same car as the 850 where the S is the sedan and the V is the wagon.

The R has 20 more HP. I believe it's intercooled and it has a different ECU. Where are you from?

I think insurance should be ok, but check with your agent/company for a quote. I am 16 and for liability it's $$200-300 USD per 6 months for an 850 TURBO (222 HP). The good thing about Volvos is that they are safe, and 95 is not that old.

I was talking to a dealer, who I guess has sold Volvos for a long time (not anymore when I talked to him, he had his own small dealership) but He told me to NOT get 96. He recommended 95,97,98. I hope this helps.

The only difference between 850-T5 (with HD suspension/TRACS) and 850-R is the ECU. Both have the same intercooler. Both have the same turbo. The differences are cosmetic -- air dam, wheels, interior, and rear spoiler. The 850-R ECU allows boost to rise to 12psi for about 20 seconds before going back down to 10 psi. With either car, you will want to purchase a re-programmed ECU to allow boost to rise to 15 psi.

Not sure why the former Volvo salesman didn't like the 1996 model year. I known that many people avoid the 1999-2001 model years because of problems with first version of "drive-by-wire" EFI system.

^I have no clue either. But that's what he told me. He was telling me years, and he specifically left out 96. I didn't bother to ask, because he was making a large list of different makes.

Are you sure both cars are intercooled? Because I looked and i didn't see anything except for my radiator.....??? Or maybe I should look harder?

That's the first time I've ever heard stay from the 96 also. All Turbo charged Volvos are intercoold. Matter of fact they used to put Intercooler in the name on the 740 and 760's.

^Where is the intercooler located? Because i'm looking from the front and I only see a radiator. No IC.

Sorry I can't elaborate on the 96. It's just the info I was told.

I assume he knows what he was talking about because he runs his own dealership (little online one w/ all kinds of cars. He had some killer BMW in his showroom/garage though). But I was looking on the walls and there were tons of Volvo awards for leader in sales or whatever.

I have cut-n-pasted one of my other posts. Look at the first photo. Our intercoolers look almost identical to our radiators. It is easy to confuse the two. Look at the second photo. This is a Front Mounted Intercooler -- probably what you are accustomed to seeing.
