Default 93 Volvo 850 Camshaft Position Sensor

My 1993 850 GLT has started to run poorly. It idles roughly, acceleration is delayed, throttle response is slow, power drops of at 3000 RPM but returns at about 4000 RPM. Engine error code is 3-1-4 which indicates " Camshaft Position Sensor signal is Absent". If I disconnect the camshaft position sensor the engine stalls and won't restart. If the sensor is bad why does the car run? Is there any way to test the sensor. If this isn't the problem any ideas?
