94 850 (non-turbo) won't start
I changed my spark plug wires andsomehow got the wires out of order on the distributor cap. I When I turned the ignition, a small puff of smoke ascended from the distributor cap. Got a Haynes manual and wired accordingly. It still won't start. The engine just turns but won't start. How can I check to find out if I have the distributor cap wired properly? Is the Haynes manual correct? How can I determine if I have damaged the coil or power stage?
No, Haynes seems incorrect. Try factory manual; see attached.
Next time when you do the wires, make sure to do them one at a time; I'm sure you've learned it by now

Hey now Will,
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/sparkplugs.php
This may also help.
I have just noticed that there is a discrepency between Bay 13 and the page that JPN has provided. I'm not sure as to which is correct as I haven't seen mine since the engine transplant.
JPN, alittle help on this?
You know more than I do here.
I'm unsure as to what youmean by "power stage"?[sm=insomnia.gif]

I got one of the black OEM cap covers off of a junkyard 93 850 today. Wired my dist according to cap numbers. Still won't start. Checked for spark. Got spark. This car was running until I changed plugs and mis-wired distributor. Thanks for your help thus far, JPN, Quick Brick, and Tech.
Got it fixed! Removed spark plugs, placed a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder, replaced spark plugs, held gas pedal to the floor, turned the key for 20 seconds and PRESTO, BINGO-BANGO! The old girl started. She had been down for 10 days. Thanks for all of the help![sm=groupwave.gif]
