94' 850 Starting problems at times... (tech,JPN,JimKW)
Hello everyone!
I've searched and read similar post for weeks but no help.
My 94' Turbo 855 (since Nov. 21st now) has a starting problem at times. It has 154,383 miles on it. In the last few weeks of owning it I've replaced the cylinder head and all tune-up parts, and then some. Some parts were needed, others were just stage 0 before I boost the hell out it! Engine runs perfect now and Trans shifts great after a flush last week.
As for the problem now, I can tell when she's gonna fire up or not before even engaging the starter. Once the run position is reached, I'll get the normal approx. four sec hum from the fuel pump andshe starts right up. But sometimes (more frequent lately) I'll get a short two sec hum and a click from a relay in the dash or under the hood and it wont even attemp to start. Cranks but no-start!At times the flashing arrow will accompany the not start, but I dont think its a PNP because the engine turns over fine "all the time". I also changed the green fuel pump relay under the hood by the windshield. Is there another somewhere? I also have spark to the plugs during the no-start. No related codes either. Just the rear 02 and EVAP code I always get.
So am I missing another relay or is the green relay shutting the pump down prematurely or what?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
CJ

i had the same thing happening to my car just fixed it today. checkthe relay above the cooling fan it should be in the center of two othersand onaplastic shield. it should click when the key is in the #2 position and you should hear a pump like sound coming from the engine.

Hi tech.
I cycle it until I hear the longer pump hum then I know i'm good to go ahead and start it. Usually within a minute, but one day last weekend i tried 30 minutes continuosly. Thats when i did all my troubleshooting and relized I had spark.

See attached for Fuel System Main Relay.
There seem to be 3 relays on top of the radiator; Cooling Fan, Secondary Air Pump & the FSMR. The factory manual indicates to the right of the fan shroud, as you look at the engine compartment from the front of the car.
I will print the page out from the PDF, scan it to convert it to JPEG format and keep it in my "For Posting" folder" for future ref.

Man yu guys should get paid for this stuff!
I knew one of my favorite moderators would get me going, and yu did JPN, but today a felow newbie beat yu to it.
DK, yu tha man(and yur pop)! I went out, turned on the key, then pulled up on that shield. As soon as it popped out of its spot, my idle control motor kicked on. Big *** smile jumped on my face 'imegently'! The small orange wire was coming out of the bottom of the connector. Bad connection fixed; problem solved!!!!!!!!
Working on cars isnt hard but an unfamilar one can drive yu crazy.
In less then two months of owning this car, i've changed cyl.head, cam seals, all tune-up parts, dash-consol-switch lights, fixed seat cable(still funny how that worked), and too much otherstuff to list, all without opening a manual. Saved A LOT of money; Thanks to this forum and people like Tech,JPN,JimKW, and many many more. Tech, yu deserve a cigar and a break man. I see yu everywhere.
I cant thank yu guys enough. If yu all were near by, I'd buy yu all drinks.
Thanks guys,
CJ

OK, I am beaten.
>Man yu guys should get paid for this stuff!
We are happy to receive donations anytime, send your check to 203...just kidding.
Tech deserves thousands of $ of donations, after having saved so many people with their headache & labour that they otherwise would have had to pay.
I too, am happy to be here because of the conscientious members. I always appreciate their being here. You do not see many of them out there in this "I deserve this, I am entitled to this" kind of world. This is the reason why I devote much of my free time being here.
Happy New Year,
JPN

If you are from an English-spoken country and a Westerner, manyJapanese peoplewould love you for no other reasons (except elderly persons). This is because manyof themare wishing to master English, which would take average Japanese people 50 to 100 years/1,000,000 miles. At work, the butt head mgrs never yell at non-Japanese and when non-Japanese make mistakes I get blamed. I have also faced discriminations in Japan because I never finished high-school in Japan (graduated from a high-school in Massachusetts) nor did I ever graduate from Japanese college.
95% of my friends are Americans (some of them have already passed away) and I miss them. And the current U.S immigrations law grants permanent residency to anyone (excluding possible terrorists, maybe), once she/he marries a U.S citizen/permanent resident. She/he does not have to be able tocommunicate inEnglish, which I think is a BS.
Rants & raves over. I apologise for non topic-related reply.
P.S: The pic was taken at Tokyo Motor Showin November 2007.
