94 850 turbo rebuild?
Hello there. I Just wanted to make a thread to get an opinion from some people who have or maybe have not tried to rebuild an engine. This isnt the car i drive for work and I have a lot time and a very big garage to work on it. My question is.
DO you think its worth a rebuild?
What happened. Oil leak issue. With constant issues with coolant, possibly leaking internally cannot say but you could often smell coolant whilst in operation. After about 5 years and going to the shop every year for tuning it overheated on me and it wasnt too good.
I was driving to work and it seems the trip did some damage when it overheated and i had to retire a struggling motor.
So i did a compression test. 1=90psi 2.3,4=0psi and 5 90psi. Measurements are consistent with throttle open and closed. No real point in a wet test here.
About 800$ If i buy all cheap parts and gaskets for a rebuild.
About 2000$+ for a new motor lifts and stands. And if im going this route i really want to upgrade to a manual transmission since im already going in deep.
So whats your opinion. Do you think its stupid in general to do any of this? thanks

not sure if they made any of these turbo models with manual. Also that's if I replace it.
They made a 98 V and S70 T5 manual, that is as close as you'd get. I cannot find 2.3 Turbo engines very easily that aren't already ruined, so in that case, i you really want to keep a 5 hole turbo, then the rebuild starts looking like the way to go. I much prefer to swap engines when I can.
Used 1994 Volvo 850 Engine 2.3L (turbo), VIN 57 (6th & 7th digit, B5234FT eng) - Purzauto Guaranteed Used Auto Parts what do you think about this site?
On car-part.com I see where the going rate for recyclers might be more like $700. If you don't value your time (and I don't) then a 90 day warranty is plenty. if it's bad, then you've lost all the time to put it in. You might find one in a yard that can be started, and that would be a plus.
wow, for $1700 I will sell you a 95 turbo engine, which you can test drive and self delivery with the rest of the car :-)
Plenty of 850 Turbos on Craigslist for under $1000 - look for one with transmission issues etc.
