Default 94 850 Volvo Wont Start

Hi all,

Anyways got a 94, 5spd, 850 that wont start.

It just wont turn over, when i put the key in the ignition nothing happens but i get these 3 lamps to come on constantly. Its not a starter, alternator. I verified the battery and its also still good.

Just wondering if you guys could help me out here and perhaps shed some light on this.

Thanks!

When you say the above, have the starter and alternator been bench-tested ... or also checked for good, tight electrical connections? Is the battery "good" as in charged ... or also free from corrosion and with good, tight connections? When you turn on the headlights, do they shine bright (indicating good connection at the battery)? I'm just asking because I have seen a lot of folks lose battery power / charging ability from some corrosive "fuzz" on their terminals.

I checked with my dad and i guess this was the first thing the mechanic actually looked at when he brought the car over. He just did that real quick but since it wasnt that they put the car aside until they have more time to get to it.

So its not the ignition switch

The altenator wasnt bench tested as far as i know.

Yah connections are all tight, and no corrosion on the battery terminals Headlights are just as they were before.

Car has charge. Battery is not very old either.

Its just that those 3 lights are ON and no idea what they mean.

Thanks!

Try to start the car with shifter in neutral. May be your pnp switch is out of aligment.

Posted reply to fast, your car is manual. Under clutch pedal there is a switch check if is activated and sending signal that clutch is depresed.
Clean contacts. Hope this helps.

Also what i forgot to mention.

Those 3 lights are on when the key is pulled out of the ignition. When the key is placed in and the car is tried to be started all the lights go out.. And nothing show on the instrument cluster.

Helpful info; that pretty much says it's the ignition switch as stated earlier...

You sure? Apparently the first thing the mechanic looked at was the ignition switch.

You're saying with the key in the OFF position and the key removed from the ignition switch, you have lights on in the instr cluster? And they go off when you turn the key to the START position?

Then yes, best guess, it's the ignition switch; but if it's not, you have something very weird going on. Not that you can rule that out, but based on the symptoms, i would bet ign switch...

Thats exactly correct.

No key in the igntion.. The 3 lights are on. As soon a key is placed in the ignition and turned for starting the lights go off and nothing show on the instrument cluster.

I dont know the mechanic said it wasnt that.. first thing he looked at.. Im starting to believe maybe hes just pulling my chain.. and trying to make it more expensive. What do you guys think?

Esadb go with ignation switch like gdog said. You can pick one from junk yard and if it does the job then buy the one.
