Risky Buy? volvo 850 T-5
Alright so i want to buy this volvo to fix and the guy thinks it is a head gasket or cylindar head. There is engine coolant leaking into the engine and this happened after the car was overheating due to a bad water pump. He replaced the water pump and this all happend after. The guy wants 700$ for it do you think i should buy it or pass?

It's gonna depend on a lot of things....first of all, $130 to do a head gasket is ridiculously low - you're gonna have more in that if you do it yourself, provided you replace everything you should do while you're in there. Did he also replace the timing belt and tensioners when he did the water pump? Conventional wisdom would say that he should have, but you should make sure on that. The timing belt and tensioners are gonna set you back $200+ on that. Sounds like the seats need some work too.
Ultimately, It's up to you on what you want to do, but if it were me, i think i would keep looking. you can find cars that are in much better shape mechanically for not a lot more money. I paid $1500 for my T5 wagon, and it has less mileage, great paint, and near perfect seats. Oh, and my engine works fine.
it's ultimately your choice though.

Volvos, overall, are pretty easy to work on, in my experience. I've done quite a few maintenance type things on my car since i got it back in May. Most of the time I find myself saying "why can't ALL car manufacturers make things this easy?" Even replacing the PCV system, which IS somewhat of an involved process, isn't that bad. yes, you have to remove the intake manifold, but it's also VERY easy to do.
this weekend I'm going to be doing my timing belt and a swap to the n/a cams - I'm not seeing anything complex about this, either.
Provided you know the basics on how to work on cars, you shouldnt run into too many problems that you can't get solutions to here.
