There are numbers on the ID tag that will tell you what it is. Best to get all the numbers off the tag.

The '95 850 is the one year you might have a conical outlet on the exhaust. If the one you have is a straight flange and the used one comes with a conical you can swap the exhaust housings. You'll need a different down pipe but the straight or angled are more common and easier to work with in the long run. If you're keeping it stock you can stick with the conical since it would be the easiest swap and not need anything. If you're thinking of doing anything performance wise now would be a good time to swap out the conical IMHO.

If you are buying the one on Ebay that says it has some side to side play you'd be better off just buying the $35-$100 rebuild kit and rebuilding it or having a friend do it for you. No telling when the new, used turbo will start leaking just as bad as the one it's replacing.

Remember to get new copper "O" rings and gaskets for the install as using the old ones is always a bad idea.

just be sure its not simply the oil return gasket pictured in K's post. A bad gasket there can push oil all over the place - I've had to replace it twice in 200K miles on my 95 850T. To your question on the turbo model - 850s have the TD04HL-15G turbo - the V70s came with the 16T and some of the newer bigger brutes have the 18T. Its a common bolt on upgrade to drop the 16T into an 850, particularly if you are upgrading the ECU and adding a downpipe.. I did some looking that that P/N seems to be matched to a 12T used in the S40 4 Cyl. Best to pass - Another option for a used part is Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market - Looks like you can find a used one for $100 or so... I usually search car-part.com, find a yard within driving distance, call ahead and pick up with no wait. Just did the ABS pump on my S40 for $75 that way...from a yard 20 miles away too.

Mt6127 is correct. That is a #49377-06250 and it's a 12T or even simpler, it's smaller than the one you have now. NOT a good idea to go smaller.

You can always rebuild the one you have in a couple hours if that long. What takes the most time is cleaning it up before you rebuild.

MT - did yours have the conical exhaust housing ??

The rebuild kit is the way to go but most parts are all available separately. The copper O rings and gaskets for the swap used to come in a kit but now you have to buy them separately on line or from a dealer. No clue what they aren't in the rebuild kit.

Your 95 850 turbo came with a TD04-15G. Sounds like you are only interested in getting that replaced, nothing performance. If so, buy a rebuild kit and fix your existing turbo up. An extremely common leak point is where the turbo oil drain tube meets the block, that seal needs to be replaced.

The TD04-15G broken down goes like this:

TD04 is the exhaust housing side. Any other TD04 turbo cartridge will fit in that housing. But you dont just throw a bigger turbo on the engine, you must add supporting modifications.

The -15G is the compressor size. So you can take a 16T cartridge and install it in your existing TD04 housing.

Everyone has given good advice here, you just need to decide your road.

Something along the same line, I have a 95 850 Turbo and I'm needing to rebuild it (its leaking oil under boost). Looking on eBay there are 2 different style rebuild kits, both have the same parts except one one has a "fallback" and one is a "super back". Short of taking this apart and seeing what I need how can i tell what one i need to order? This is still my daily driver so taking it apart is not gonna happen till I'm ready to rebuild

I'm up and running again. Got me a used turbo and it's working fine. Now the lights on my instrument cluster are remaining on. I did change my ignition switch a few months ago when it happened the first time

when you say lights, do you mean the instrument backlights (from the headlight switch) or the warning lights (ie as if your key is in position 2?). What happens when you pull fuse #35 (dash lights/sun roof/tracs control)? Anything change if you move the shifter around? Sounds like the ignition switch as noted (particularly if you are referring to the warning lights) but these are easy tests to try - not sure if the PNP switch is in play here (ie you are turning off the key but the car thinks its still in gear...

Yes the warning lights. Will check fuse#35 when I am leaving the office this afternoon. What should I look for when I pull the fuse? This happens when I switch off the car. The lights with either turn on immediately or will come on within 30 seconds of turning the car off and removing the key
