Default 96 850 Odometer not working

Hi all, this is my first post here on this forum. I have read a lot here so far and think that this is a great source of knowledge.

I recently bought a 96 850 GLT and like everything about it. There is one issue I have: the odometer is stuck, it is not registering the miles as I am driving it.

I am not sure where to start to look for the cause and was hoping that some of you on this forum may be able to give me some ideas or pointers about what could potentially be the problem and possible solutions.

Thank you in advance,
Adrian

Welcome to the forum!

The broken odometer is a common problem with our rides. There's plenty of write-ups - here or at www.matthewsvolvosite.com or www.volvospeed.com - on how to open the dash, pull the panel and replace the small gear.

I believe you can buy the gear at IPDUSA.COM or FCPGROTON.COM.

The gear is about 25 bucks, and once you have the instrument panel out, its about a 20 minute swap. just take the odometer gear cluster out, pull the gears, swap in the new one, and replace.

Just had to replace mine...

Start to finish it takes about an hour and the video from IPD really helps IMO.

Good luck.

I too bought the new gear & DVD from IPDUSA.com
it was a very easy job & took me about 1/2 hour.

my cluster had 3 wire assemblies/harness to remove, the two on the top that the video shows and a smaller one on the bottom of the cluster that video doesn't show you. the mechanic in the video just mentions a third wire harness. this 3rd wire harness the data for the LCD display aka the information center for MPG, MPH, Miles left unti fuel tank is empty, outside temperature...

Is there any way to pull the actual mileage from a 96 Volvo 850 before I replace my odometer gear? I ordered my odometer gear from IPD and I want to know if I can get the real mileage before I do this repair, and both my local independent Volvo repair shop and the local Volvo dealer has said they can't get the mileage from the ECU.

If your '96 has the ODBI reader behind the passenger headlight, there is a way to pull the mileage. I'm not sure how, 'cause I have a '97 which is only ODBII. Either here, or volvoforums.com or volvospeed.com will have what you need.

I believe only the '94 & '95's have both ports.
