Default '96 850 odometer still not working

Hi, new to the forum, but it looks like there is a lot of good info here. Hopefully someone can help with my odometer question. I have seen several posts, but none quite the same. My odometer quit, so I change both the 12 and 15 tooth gears, but it still does not work. The 15 tooth gear was definatly bad, it had two teeth broken off. I replaced the gears within 5 miles (the next day) of the time that it quit, so I don't think much else could have gone wrong in that time frame. I took the dashpad out, removed the instrument cluster, replaced the gears and the ABS bulb, then put it all back together. Is that all there is to it, or am I missing something. Thanks for any help.

Thats all there is to it.

Here is 2 things I have seen.

1.The odometer didn't seat 100% when putting everything back together.
2. The trip button is Hung up and pushing it and releasing it sets it back into place.

Thanks for the reply. I checked both of those today. I was hoping that the trip mechanism was hung up, but it seemed to be ok. I removed and then reseated the odometer and drove it again, still no go. Is there a way to test the small motor that drives the odometer?

Im not sure of the wires you could test from.
If a wiring diagram will help click link. You will have to search and find the speedo cluster section.

With the odometer together but not installed in the cluster yet, see if spinning the wheel gets the odometer to advance. That would eliminate any mechanical problems with the gears. Also, check to make sure the gear is flush with the outer gear.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that, and the odometer worked fine that way. I then went to VoluParts here in Atlanta and they let me try a drive motor that they had on the shelf. That did not help either. They then let me try anothr instrumetn cluster and it worked. I bought that, but then when I got home I tried swaping the odometer from the new cluster to my cluster and it worked. I don't know why my odometer no longer works, it seems to turn free, but for whatever reason it wasn't working. So now I have an good '94 850 instrument cluster with a bad odometer if anyone needs one. I quess I will put it on E-Bay. For what it is worth, the folks at VoluParts were great in helping me straighten this out. Not many places will let you "try out" an electronic part like they did. Any way, thanks for the help.
