Ive been having the same problem, but with a 95 GLT 5-speed. I diagnosed the problem and figured out that my Mass Airflow Sensor and my Oxygen Sensor's were bad. They're not that expensive online.
First thing first though. Try to find an auto place that will read OBD II codes for free. If you manage to find a place that will do that for you, then tell us what the codes read.
If your codes say thats its running too rich (which is more that likely is) then you may have a problem with your mass airflow sensor or oxygen sensor or possibly both.
You can try and spray some Carb & Choke cleaner into your air intake. Just take out the air filter and spray it in the intake. That gave me a temporary fix and helped my car out a bit.
I cant help anymore untill you have the codes pulled from your car. After that, everyone can help alot more.
Also, I forgot to ask: is your car having problems with acceleration i.e much slower than normal or disrupted powerband?
