97 850 CEL on, code PO 442
I have a 97 850 wagon (no turbo), CEL came on a couple weeks ago. Just borrowed neighbors scan tool and came up with PO 442. For this particular scan tool you have to go to their website to get code definitions. I entered it and they say there is no definition for that code on a Volvo. Does anybody know what it means?
You have to remember it's computer speak and there is a world of difference from a "O" to a "0".
For those who still don't get it - "O" = oh ,,, "0" = Zero
It's P 0442.
A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened: A loose or improperly affixed gas cap A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand) A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube Other small leak in EVAP system Faulty vent o-ring seal

The On Board Diagnostics code P0442 deals with an automobile’s EVAP, or Evaporative Emission Control System. Its function is to prevent gas vapors from leaking into the atmosphere. What makes the P0442 code a bad one is that it means a small leak in the EVAP has been detected, and the hole where the leak is coming from may be smaller than a pin-*****.
A common cause is either leaving the gas cap a bit loose, not cranking it down till it clicks a few times or filling the gas tank with the the engine running.
If not one of those two then it's likely a loose or cracked hose in the EVAP system.

Wow, I should have remembered this. I have had this code before. I replaced a hose near the radiator (I think it was the main vacuum supply hose for the EVAP system) and I put dielectric grease on the fuel cap gasket. Looks like it is probably time to replace the fuel cap or just the gasket, whichever is available.
