Default Possible 850 purchase code 442

Looking at a 97 850 wagon (GLT) has a 442 code "Barometric Sensor intermittent operation" the garage where the car sits believes is a wiring problem. Any knowledge of this code 442? Thanks!! Dave

Hi Dave, have you searched the code error?

Does the car start and run fine?

Default 442 code

He says runs fine- at least it did till he tore the hoses off the oil cooler sliding over a parking block. I've since heard it drove into the mechanic dry- no oil. Think I'm passing...

I am not sure where the current owner got that code explanation; P0442 is an EVAP leak code. It is fairly common problem, minor effect in engine running, and simple to fix.

I tore the oil cooler hose too, and drove it about 1/2 city block and shut it down. It probably takes seconds, maybe 10 to empty the oil out of the engine -- oil shoots out at high pressure. I would give the engine maybe 20-30 seconds to work without oil, before pistons are welded to the block.

If his car starts now, he dodged a big bullet. If the car does not start, it's got nothing to do with Code 442.

I don't know. If it drove to the shop it may be alright, really depends how far he drove it. It would have been a lot smarter to have it towed to the shop. They can always do a compression test to check the motor.

Well, in my case, I am not sure if it was smartness or experience or me just being afraid of such thing, since I knew my cooler lines were suspect. As soon as I heard spray and smelled oil simultaneously, I veered off the center lane on Second Avenue and pulled over on the left lane. My car continued the rest of its journey on the flatbed of Hard Rock Tow truck.
