Advice needed. Starts but will not shift into gear...
Here is the car: 1996 Volvo 850 turbo.
Here is a list of the symptoms.
The car will start but I need to manually move the key from the III position to the II position or else starter will make noise. (Before you could just start it at III then it would click back into II on its own).
When it is in II position I the lights, radio, and power windows work.
When the car is running the lights, radio, and power windows don't work.
And here is the big one... it will not shift out of park when the car is running.
When I have the key in the II position it will shift through all the gears no problem.
On the dash I get no check engine light. I do get an ABS light and SRS light that I have not seen before. (I have owned the car for a year).
I have reset a check engine light a few times and it has given me a misfire code. (I was thinking I need to get the volvo plugs in there).
All fluids look good, no problems that I noticed before it went out. Any ideas? Your advice is appreciated. Thanks! Let me know if you need any clarification on what I am describing.

I looked around FCP and did not see the part. I am going to check eeuro next. ANd look in my Haynes. Any chance you could post a link to the part you speak of. BTW: thanks for the response. Does not sound to bad.
Just curious, why do you think that it would not shift out of park with engine running. I assume that it has something to do with the cpu sensing a problem and thus locking the shift so you can't drive. ????

If I am not mistaken that piece plugs in behind where the key goes. In other words looks like i just need to drop the cover piece around the steering wheel column then plug and play.
