Airbox thermostat

Airbox thermostat
I was reading up on a number of the posts regarding the airbox thermostat. When I opened up my airbox I don't see the tabs that some people write about to push down to remove the inlet body from the housing. I have a NA 1997 850 so I thought those write ups would apply to my car. My airbox seems to be essentially one solid piece of plastic. (1st pic)
There is a valve that directs air to come from either a silver tube that connects to the back of the engine (2nd pic), or to nothing ie the engine bay (3rd pic).
In the 4th pic you can see the two options of air my airbox has, the silver tube or open to the engine bay.
My questions are:
1) what is the "hot" air intake? the air coming from the silver tube or the air coming from the engine bay?
2) Is there supposed to be a tube coming from the end of the arrow I placed on the 3rd pic to go to a fresh air supply somewhere?
3) Anyone else have this setup with the lower half of the airbox being one solid piece of plastic with no airbox thermostat in sight?
Thanks a lot!

The hot air intake is the silver tube one that goes to the rear of the engine.
There should be a tube where that arrow is. It is a plastic flexi hose that goes to the top of the radiator. (Pictured)
The airbox thermostat controls the flap where you have put the arrow. The direction of the flap in the picture means it is getting cold air intake so I wouldn't worry about it. If that flap was shut then you would need to jam the flap open.
