Default ATM sticking in traction, sport light not coming on

850 GL 1996 automatic, the ATM just started misbehaving. When in Drive and slowing down to stop, it stays in traction like a manual ("clutch" not working) and will stall unless you shift to nuetral. When moving it shifts OK and the SPort switch works, but the red LED does not come on. The Winter button does,'t have any effect, no light on dash when pressed.

My V70 did something similar to that. My torque converter had gone out.

Just noticed, that when I select 3 or L the red "up arrow" that appears on the dash no longer appears. The Winter button also has no effect. I can drive starting in L and in D the gears change nomally, but when slowing down in idle the traction doesn't disengage fully, so if I stay in Drive and stop, using the bake, the engine staggers as the revs drop below 500 but it will still keep running , just.
