Thanks. I did see that link, but the 1st time it was taking so long to load I moved on to a task here at work and then forgot to look at it.

It is good. No sweat. But... i've got an in-dash GPS unit where the factory radio is... now i'm worried that i'll have to mess with that. And that's something I don't want to do. I know nothing when it comes to electronics, wires, voltage, and all the electronics terms involved... I really don't want to mess with that.

AHHH!! This is all from these stupid plastic bars. DAMNIT! There's got to be some sort of creative fix for this. I especially don't really want to pull all this at a junk yard and then again at home (i'll have to find a friend's garage or driveway for this).

I guess i'll go to a junkyard this weekend and see if I can even find one the same color.

 

Well, I guess with the GPS unit... it's got to have plugs and connectors that go into the back of it, as long as I just pull those out and keep them all together (zip ties for instance) I should have any problem pulling it and then putting it back in.

I'm freaking myself out because this is such a huge job.

I gotta post a photo of my in-dash GPD unit... you guys would love it. Fits so well in the factory radio slot.

 

Sweet. Sorry I'm not closer - I'd be glad to help you out on your projects. Hopefully someone else can chime in that can help you out. Look forward to seeing that GPS. If you put your GPS in the radio slot though, where did you install the radio?

 

The GPS unit has an FM/AM radio, CD player, iPod connection (I ran through to the glovebox), subwoofer/amp connection, and even a rear camera connector (though I haven't done that).

Kept my factory cassette radio... in case I were to ever sell the Volvo. But with 220K miles on it, I doubt it (though the engine was replaced and has about 85K on it).

 

GOT IT FIXED!

Used the Dremel to cut the little posts off junkyard dash (that was torn to hell anyway)... and then actually, the way I did attached them on my car... I cut off the same length off the broken knubs that were left over from the cluster attachment bars (used a steak-knife as the Dremel wouldn't get in there well-enough)... and then cleaned it all up, made sure it was a "glue-able" contact, and then I actually clips the brackets to the clips and then glued them in place (that way I wouldn't have to cliup them after gluing) used DevCon 5-min epoxy. Perfect fix.

So glad to be done with that rattle and spared myself the time of removing the dash.

 

reading this thread got me slightly curious. I'm not sure what the brackets look like that everyone is talking about but could you not screw it instead of epoxy or JB-Weld? Whatever you are screwing into (plastic I'm assuming) get some meat behind it like the block of wood mentioned earlier. Should make it more weight bearing. Unless the screw is going to be exposed or the shape of the bracket won't allow it of course. Just throwing it out there.

 

Yea, no way to do that really... the backside would be your "visual" area in front of the face of the instrument cluster itself.

 

I see. I assumed the bracket was mounting to the car and not the dash however re-reading the posts, it makes sense now.

 

If you have the room, it's amazing what you can secure with small tie wire and a small but stiff spring to hold tension; however I don't recall the amount of room I had to try this and it would probably invove drilling and using self tapping screws to secure wire ends. I've never had luck with eithe epoxy or crazy glue jel holding anything togather when it's in tension
