Default Automatic trans cooler

Anybody have any experience installing cooler on an 850? If so is there any thing I should be especially aware of? Did it provide the results you were expecting?

Thanks

Have you done a search? I've seen something about one somewhere.

Not yet. But I am installing one this week. The cooler inside the radiator leaked and my trans was full of water, radiator has trans oil.
Talked to my friend who happens to be head mechanic at the local volvo dealership and he told me to hit autozone for a cheap cooler and forget about it..
Theres one in autozone for 19.99 or so..
Gotta finish the trans flushing first.. After 3 gallons of fluid, now its pink instad of chocolate milk colored..

Are you towing a trailer? If not, stock setup is plenty, combined with draining and filling the transm every time you do an oil change.

Liquid-cooled coolers (like stock) are a lot more efficient than the air-cooled ($ 20 Autozone units).

El-Chopper: you are in Puerto Rico, right? If you use your car a lot in traffic, I seriously recommend you to go back to stock. Get a good radiator dude. Ask yourself: how is your transmission fluid cooled sitting in traffic?

Transmission is cooled via manual override switch that enables me to have coolant fan operational whenever I want. This transmission has issues when it heats up. That is why I am installing another cooler in series with original. Maybe I can get some more service from this tranny

I understand, obviously something is wrong. Here is a run-down of steps I would take (in order of importance):

1- I would get the biggest auxiliary transm cooler I can fit. $ 20 units are small. See if you can fit larger ones.

2- Since you are having issues, you might be losing clutch material, so install a Magnefine inline filter (about $ 20).

3- I would add a "pusher" fan in front of the aux transm cooler. Since you are in Florida, I would have it on all the time, with engine running. Engine coolant fan is behind the radiator and is a "puller" fan. Especially if your car is Turbo (i.e. have intercooler).

4- Synthetic fluid behaves better in hot temperatures.

Installed correctly aux transm coolers can decrease the fluid temperature to an additional 20-30*F in stop-and-go traffic.

I added one. Purchased a B&M trans cooler, picked up some fittings from Home Depot, picked up one extra trans cooler line from a wrecker then made a mount for it under the front drivers corner in the open left spoiler area. I installed it and it leaked because I used teflon tape. Took it out, soldered it and that fixed it.

The path is from the trans to the OEM cooler then out of the OEM to the B&M then back to the trans. Dunno if it helped but I felt better that I had it. I am now running a manual so I dont have it in the car anymore.

Thumbs up

The odd thing about this whole issue(trans woes) is that if I drive in 3rd gear the trans shifts fine all the time

Thanks to everyone who has given feedback
