bad muffler..what are the symptoms?
Hi guys, just wanted to know what would be the effects of a muffler doing bad? after recently changing my catalytic with a universal one, it was a bit better but i notice now that there is still some vibrations coming from the muffler. When the car is warmed up and i'm idling...if i give it quick shot of gas, there is a bad vibration happening around the muffler area. I know that if it where a turbo model it may not be that bad as the turbo needs more free-flow but i have a N/A engine which needs the baffles to give some back-pressure..i also notice at times, when coming to a stop or if i start up my car it idles around 1500 RPM for a second or two and then comes back down, can this be one of the effects? does fuel consumption play a part?
Hey Tech. basically my setup is...manifold...cat (welded on) tubing after cat is welded with tubing of muffler.....muffler sitting on the hangers well....and the exhaust pipe (normally it should rest on 2 hanger, but i don't have the hangers, just a solid flat metal bar holding the exhaust pipe at the back..no vibration on the pipe end).
I had the car on ramps at the rear, running on idle. I crawled underneith the muffler and felt around for leaks..didn't find any, will look along the piping tomorrow. I put my hands around the muffler and there was a good amount of vibration present. maybe it's rusting from the inside? a broken baffle?
I was reading some other people's posts about how they changed the muffler on they N/A 850's and noticed a smoothness and slight increase in performance..can this hold true?
thanks

Ya i see what you're saying...the hangers on the muffler are okay, but because there are no hangers at the end of the tail pipe, where the pipes is being help solidly, the vibrations aren't getting absorbed and causes more vibration in the setup..hmm...the thing is the end of the tailpipe does have the metal hangers but there aren't the coresponding ones on top..is there a way to get them on? or do i need to go to a muffler shop to have them welded? thanks

The exhaust tip is being held with a strap that is quite solid, no slack at all! does it need to have some play in it?
As for a replacement muffler..i noticed a whole bunch of them..flowmaster, borla, walker,flowtech..ect. the thing is that i don't want the exhaust to be loud and i need a muffler with the baffles in it..any advice/suggestions? thanks

update***
so i wanted to take another look today. I put the rear of the car on ramps, opened the garage door (it's quite cold outside) and started the car. i looked underneith and gave a few shots of the throttle, i saw there was exhaust coming out of 2 holes..one underneith and one at the back side of the muffler. I'll be taking it today if i can to have it changed...is it worth changing the rest of the piping after the muffler to the tailpipe, or just the muffler will do? thanks

So i went to the muffler shop where i got my cat changed. Anywho he took a look at it and said there there where indeed a few holes in it and there was some metal rattling inside (maybe due to the broken cat)...so i told him to change it and he did and also put on a nice exhaust tip..so 440.00$ later i now have a nice smooth running, quiet exhaust system. I'm surprised at how quiet it is inside! ciao
