Default Brake Debate- Bigger Braker Better?

Hey gang,

I have a 1996 850t with 16" Columbia wheels, which I love. 140K, just did the timing belt- thanks to everyone! Will do the dash lights (service light) and PCV system, and then it's time for brakes, then a new headliner.

Refer to this webpage:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/category-ex...137/by_year/46

They offer the big brake conversion kit and say that it will work with 16" rims. IPDs version does not fit with 16" rims. I like the FCP because it has the SS lines with it too. I wanted to know if anyone has used either of these kits, and what everyone's thoughts are on the bigger brakes. I'd also hate to have the standard brakes looking silly behind the rim with a tiny little cross drilled disc.

So do I use the standard, premium, or big brake kit?

What do you guys think?

I think I would just go with the premium brake kit, unless you plan on doing some big performance upgrades soon where you going to need some serious stopping power.

The stock brakes on these cars are magnificent the way they are. Fastest braking car out of the 5 we have.

unless your car needs a brake job, there's other areas of your car I would focus on.

Oh, it is brake time. We've put 55K miles on the car and they weren't new brakes when we got it. There is a definite ridge worn into at least the front right disc that I could see and feel when I had the wheel off for the timing belt. It makes a horrid squeal, and I keep waiting to hear the pad backing grind on the rotor, but it hasn't happened yet. I think the brakes are very important and I shouldn't have let them go this far, but I wanted to make sure the timing belt was successful before I did anything else to the car in case I totaled it with the repair. The book value on these 850 is just below the labor charge for a few major repairs.

Thanks for the input- I'm leading towards the premium kit.

Personally I will not use anything except OEM pads. I will use Brembo rotors or OEM.

yeah, well then if it's brake time and you plan on having the car for a while, might as well put on nicer brakes, I don't think the bbk is necessary though, go with the premium.

+1, unless you are going to track your car or have some major modifications to the engine and need to bigger brakes to stop, the BBK is not needed.
