Default burning oil/smoking at idle

i have a 1995 850 turbo. after a few minutes of running and the car iswarmed up, it will start to smoke at idle. when i come to a stop and sit for a second or two the smoke starts. i dont notice any smoking while under normal driving down the road, but as soon as i stop the smoke starts. i am thinking it may have something to do with a line going to the turbo? are there any oil lines going into the turbo? someone also told me the oil seperator may be clogged? but im not sure since it only smokes when the turbo is not running. any suggestions????

It's got to be the small vacuum line running from the turbo intake tube to the intake manifold. This is the line that is supposed to remove the blowby gasses while at idle. It is common for the nipple at the turbo tube to clog up with grease or carbon. Take the line off at the nipple and blow through it, if you can't the line is clogged. Also take a piece of wire and insert it into the nipple, this is where it seems to clog first.

Replace your pcv system. If the oil leak still persists, then it is your turbo oil feed or return line.

I would not suggest replacing the whole pcv system, at least not until you clean out the fittings that go into the turbo inlet. It's a lot of work to replace the whole thing, and there isn't much under the intake that can clog up. One odd thing I've noticed about Volvo owners is they seem to take repairs to the extreme. I figure on a car with 100k miles there is no reason to go overkill.

+1 on what jmana said. I'm one who does not take his repairs to the extreme. I'm one who believes "if it ain't broke don't fix it". For instance I don't change my shocks and struts just because I have 150K on my car is if still rides fine. When the car tells me it needs new ones, it will get new ones. I am getting ready to do my pcv system though just to see if it will imporve my gas mileage on my T5R. Not really having any problems though other than my mpg is lower than the other two cars.

I don't see how the PCV system would affect gas mileage.

If you don't replace everything make sure everything is clear.
We just had a S70 come into the shop the other day because it was smoking like a freight train.
3 different shops tried fixing it. From replacing the Vent box to installing a brand new turbo. The owner got so mad he sold it for $1500.00. 1998 S70 T5 super clean with just 100k on it.

Turned out to be when the Dealer installed the vent box they didn't check the lines.
The one from the vent box that routes around the front of the engine to the rear by the turbo was clogged solid.
Installed a new line and all was fine.

#7 was the pipe that was clogged.

Hi all

Have a volvo c70T5 88000miles on clock and peformance wise nothing has changed but the exhaust has been smoking white. I have had all sorts people tell me different things from the turbo to the piston oil rings. I have recently changed the PCV cleaned all hoses new oil filter and oil. Whilst changing the PCV and hoses we noticed oil everywhere and the blockage was quite apparent. Now all put together as started engine running as expected there is still smoke coming from exhaust, is this what is left in exhuast system or do we have another problem?

You could do a compression test but I would drive it for about 1,000 miles before I did anything else. White smoke usually indicates coolant or (gulp) head gasket. Don't push it, just drive it for a while and see if it clears up.

Also remember if your turbo is leaking you will have a significant amount of oil in your IC lines.
If you pvc is clean and you have done a stage 0. as was said befor run a compression test, first dry then wet. if your numbers are good look towards the valve stem seals.

Hi All

Have started enigine after pcv and blockages cleared but the white smoke is still apparent once engine warms up the smoke if far too much to drive, I tried at night 3 days ago and it seemed to be clearing with hardly anything coming from exhaust but after sitting for 2 more days started and it got alot worse. The car drives perfectly but it is just the smoke. If turbo is causing the smoke would I notice power difference? Dont know what else to do is there a way of checking the tubro is at fault without removing it or is there another step I should do before I consider major work to be done. Or do I drive it to clear the oil out? MMMM

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I was have read that WHITE smoke indicates water or coolant and BLACK or dark GREY smoke pointed towards oil.

I would suggest driving the car at least 50 miles and draining the oil into a clean pan. If you see coolant in the oil, you'll know that you have a head gasket leak. Some say that you can smell coolant in the exhaust but I have never had the problem so I don't know how easy that is to determine.

Just had another thought, there is a chance that your head gasket is leaking into your combustion chamber and not into the oil. In that case you will be loosing some or a little coolant and will not find any in your oil.
