Default A/C & Rec lights flashing & Ball Joints

Hi All,

I have a '94 850 Turbo and I'm having two issues. First - the climate control isn't working. When I try to turn it on I just get flashing lights from the rec and a/c switches but nothing happens. I did notice right before the things stopped working that the fan motor under the dash had started to squeak - I'm thinking perhaps it just needs to be replaced?? I have the Haynes manual for my car and it doesn't look like this is a very dificult fix. Any suggestions?

The second thing is that I was told by the dealer (I took it in for recall service) that my front ball joints need to be replaced. According to my manual, they are an integral part of the control arm on '94 and later models and cannot be replaced independently My original thought was that I would take out the control arms, buy new ball joints and take the parts to a machine shop with a hydraulic press to get them installed in the control arms, then put the control arms back in the car. Howevcer, according to the haynes, this isn't an option, that I simply must replace the entire control arm assemblies (by the way, I'm talking about the front ball joints).

Anyone know anything about this and whether or not I might be able to get away without having to buy the entire control arms?

THanks!

Luke

Yes it sounds like the blower motor is bad.

Yes you will need to replace the entire CONTROL ARM.

Sticking with this thread rather than starting another.... I have a 94 850 N/A. The bushing on the lower left control arm is shot. Ball joint is fine. I can get a replacement for about $14. Any reason I should not go this route?

That should be fine replacing the bushing.

It indeed sounds like your blower motor bearings went out. Nine times out of ten when that happens it also takes out the power stage (often called the blower resistor). Read the codes from port B-1 and it will help you figure out if the power stage is bad as well.

The power stages can be repaired if you are handy with a soldering iron. Here is a link that discusses the power stage repair.
