canister sucking in air

The canister is what collects gas fumes off the gas tank to keep from expelling hydrocarbons off into the atmosphere. There is an electric solenoid, kind of an electric on off valve in the circuit leading up to the intake. When the engine is at higher RPMs the valve should open and vent the fumes into the intake to burn them. At idle the valve should be closed all the time. Might be that yours is sticking. It's a canister purge valve. I don't know off hand which valve it is but I'd try disconnecting each hose when it's making noise and see if disconnecting any of them changes the noise. If one does, follow it and see if it has an electric valve in line.

If you can unplug it and the noise stops that means the valve isn't stuck open and is properly reacting to a signal to open and by disconnecting it you know it closes. I'm not sure when the canister purges but it might be that it does purge at idle and the system is running appropriately. The valve sounds like it's good.
I'd be curious if the canister is cracked or someone gutted it because it became saturated from someone overfilling the gas tank and it was making the engine run too rich. You know, the people at the pump pulling the trigger over and over trying to get to whatever it is they're trying to round up to. It overfills the tank and it pushes liquid gas up that vent hose and into the canister. I've never had anyone be able to notice by sound when a canister is purging.
