cd changer
I just picked up an Alpine CHM-S620 changer this weekend to connect to my SC-811 radio! I am learning this stuff the hard way. If the 801 is anything like the 811, you'll need what they call a VOLALP adapter to make the Alpine changer plug into the back of the SC-801.

It gets worse...
Any 'M-Bus' Alpine CD changer should work provided you have a VOLALP interface cable. This is designated by an M in the model number of Alpine changers. If you select a newer Alpine changer that uses Ai-Net (designated by an A in the model number) then VOLALP won't work and you need a different/more expensive adapter.
Or, just go with an OEM Volvo changer and avoid the adapter mess altogether...

I don't know much about the 805. I take it you're looking at european models? I'm in the US and I have an SC-811. If you are looking for CD capability and don't care about having a CD changer, I know the SC-815 and SC-816 are CD/cass. models and may also have better built in amplifiers than your SC-801. They usually go for about $150-200 on ebay. That would be the easiest route to go CD and are very easy to swap out. Since I've never seen an SC-805, just make sure to look at the back of whatever you buy to make sure the connectors are compatible. I believe they should be.

What I've got is an 8-pin 'mini' DIN connector marked 'CD' on the back of the SC-811. The Alpine CHM-S620 has an 8-pin 'full-size' DIN. The wire that came with the changer has full-size DIN on both ends. That's why I think I need the adapter.
If you've found a way to get around this problem, please let me know. It's really annoying that I had to spend $30 on this adapter!!

Thanks for checking tech but it's ok. My fancy $30 adapter showed up in the mail today so I went ahead and hooked everything up and it all works pretty well. I had to splice into the radio's ACC connection because the adapter uses power I guess to run the changer.
I think it would just be easier to use a Volvo OEM changer and avoid this whole mess. Anyway, I'm just glad it all works now.

Thanks. It was interesting because when I pulled the radio out the 12V and ACC wires were already spliced into as if a changer was in the car but was removed at some point. My understanding is that the 850s were pre-wired for CD changers. Appparently whoever had the car before me yanked out the changer AND the wiring with it. Maybe that's why I needed to have this adapter thing.
