Default changing spark plug wires....

Hi guys, well i think it will soon be time to change my spark plug wires....the date stamped is of 04...so they are now 4 years old....they do look to be in good shape though..
What i wanted to know is....do i need to change the cap and rotor as well or will just the wires do? i've never changed a cap and rotor, is it a tough job? thanks

I think you can defer replacement for the wires for another 1-2 years, but it also depends on the mileage (I do mine at every 60,000 miles/less) as well. Are the wires you have now made by Bougicord? Bougicord, French, is the OEM for the 850s. I would do an Ω test on each wire, and if they pass then I would leave them for another year or two. If you insist, however, make sure to get Bougicord wires:

If the cap & rotor have never been replaced, I would do both. No, the job is not difficult and any DIYer can replace them but make sure to number the original cap & wires just in case. I believe you need Allen keys for the rotor. Get a Haynes manual if you do not have one yet.

Other experts would be chiming in shortly for better assistance...

I agree I would wait a little longer on them.

I think i will wait a bit....but "santa" (the wife) was asking me what i want for Christmas...hmmm maybe i'll ask for that kit you pointed at...should i also change out the coil? (not included in kit)...

Test the wires with the ohm meter. Most of the time they are working or not working... Do you have any rough idle or feel a miss?

You don't need the coil unless its bad.

Wires, cap, and rotor. Thats all.

Hope this helps.

hey, sorry for the ignorance, but how exactly do you test it with an ohm meter? i do have a multimeter...let me know..
Idle is okay, fairly steady. I do notice, mainly when the engine is cold, that at times when i give it throttle, the rpm's climb, then there is a slight feeling of it missing then it picks up again...
thanks

Here is a good article - http://www.popularmechanics.com/how_...e/1272351.html

Take one wire off and test it - one at a time so you do not get them mixed up.
Take the spark plug wire and press the (+) test lead to one side and the (-) test lead to the other side touching the copper connectors. As this article states, you should come up somewhere in the range of 10k to 15k. Zero can indicate a bad wire.

You mostly notice a bad wire when the motor is under a load - taking off from a start, acceleration, going up a hill, etc...

Oh, if you have the spark plug boot pliers, those are a good investment.

Thanks.

In Northern Europe, Santa drives a Volvo... or his reindeer is turbocharged...with Check Engine Light always on...let alone ABS warning...
