Another happy 850 owner -

My check engine light is now on, actualy has been for a while along withthe other on and off lights for ABS, TRACs, etc...

Anyway, took the car (96 turbo wagon) to Autozone for them to read the codes, and they said they could not - does it take a special reader? Where can I get one?

Need to get the caar inspected this month and they won't do it with the light on. Can I clear the light by disconnecting the battery?

A regular OBDII scanner will read the codes on a 1996 car.

Either try another Auto Zone or a different person at that one.

No disconnecting the battery won't clear the codes/light.

I took the car to a different AZ, and sure enough they read the codes. Bad O2 Sensor, bank 1 #1. Two questions,:

Is this difficult to relplace?

How do I get the codes cleared, I read a posting that indicated the possibility of conditions that will cause the O2 sensor to appear bad, but actullay be ok? Would like to trhy this before i invest the time an $ in the sensor.

Usually a vaccum leak is the only main thing that will throw the code.

But if it came up as front HO2 sensor heated circuit then the sensor is bad.

If is fairly easy to replace the worse part is getting your hand to the plug to unplug it.

I am going to invest in an ODB II reader for this car, check the vacuum lines and go form there, Thanks, for the help. Amazon has a good reader for $69 - the same one they used at AZ...

 

I'm curious as to the specs of the OBD-II reader.

Actron's CP9175 is an excellent scanner, which was used at an AZ in Chicago when I worked there. But the quality comes at a price (approx $160) and it was made in the USA. The downside was that it was only able to access engine & tranny ECUs.

When it comes to electronic control system diagnostic equipment, I have 100% trust on Axelm of Argentina.

I just made my own scanner out of a broken remote control. I have read the codes but I can't seem to reset them. JPN, do you remember on which pins the other control modules were connected?

I bought my scanner at AZ for about $70 two years ago. It works fine for reading normal codes and turning the CEL off. I use it all the time on my three cars.

 

Its the CP9135 - looks good to me.

 

Got the scanner from Amazon the next day! Read the codes, one for slow repsonse on O2 sensor. I cleared the codes, and light has not come back on... wait and see....

If it comes back again the O2 sensor is bad.

 

You can sometimes clean the o2 sensor as well and reuse it...

Axel, how the hell did you make a reader out of a remote??? I want to see a pic of this!!! :-0

 

So far so good! The light has not returned... now for the ABS lights and broken door hinge...

The remote has 2 switches with 4 positions: forward, reverse, left and right. It also has a LED. That is enough to read the codes off this car. The LED blew because ir could not stand 12V, so I had to use an analog multimeter to count the amount of pulses.
