Check engine light blues

Check engine light blues
Hi All,
A couple of weeks ago i bought my 850. It's a 2 litre 20v manual with 175k on the clock, in pretty good shape inside and out. I've done about 500 miles so far. Lovely car!
Anyway, on my way to the sailing club today the check engine light (Licture of an engine, fan in the centre and wavy things underneath the fan - i have no manual) came on. I backed off the throttle and it went out. Put my foot down again and it came on. I stopped and checked oil which was fine but the water was low. I topped it up and was almost home when it started to do it again. I got home and checked the water level which was again low so there is obviously a leak somewhere.
So is the light related to coolant level as i think it might be?
Secondly are there any common water leak areas? I don't think it's the headgasket as there is no gloop on the oil filler cap or the dipstick and it's lost 1 and a half to 2 expansion tanks full of water so i'd expect some mayo!
Thanks a lot!

RE: Check engine light blues
Well welcome The Edge,
What year isyour Brick?
Here is a link for an owners manual.
http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/1994/1994_850/94850_1.html
From what you have mentioned, I believe that you are correct.
Get the leak taken care of and get back to us with the results.
From there youcan learn to read your error codes so you can stay on top of things.

RE: Check engine light blues
Thanks for then replies! It seems it's not the check engine light afterall, it's the low coolant light which saves some bother. My money was on water pump or heater matrix i'll have a good prod around today.
It's a 1995 one inshocking red. I only paid £300 for it so i was/am expecting a few woes, but it's plished up beautifully and runs sweet too now it's new plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm
I fixed your picks (Tech)

RE: Check engine light blues
It was the water pump, which we've changed along with the cambelt and the serpentine belt.
Next job will be to sort the intermittent ABS light out. I think it's a connection rather than a dodgy unit becasue it seems to come on and go off almost randomly, staying off for ages then coming on when you think it's sorted.
