Default Checking Cylinder Compression...w/ engine out???

Anyone know if it's possible to crank the motor by hand to do a Compression test? Any idea what compression specs are for this motor?

I should have done that before pulling the engine, but didn't think about it til today. Figure i might as well check it out just incase anything else needs to be fixed.

I don't think you can spin it fast enough to get accurate readings.
Most are about 190 or so PSI.

what about giving the starter some juice and let it crank? I just have a bad feeling that thing would be jumping all over the place if i tried that.

That would be dangerous. The torque of the motor turning over could create an unsafe situation with the motor moving around.

I agree it would probably jump all over the place.

Definitely not a good idea. I watched a friend do it (against all advice) and it wasn't pretty.

i know there is a way because i see it (pulled engines being test for cylinder compression) being done all the time at junk yards. i believe they just securly support the engine on a stand and hit the starter with 12 volts...not too, sure but aslong as its tied down it really couldnt hurt anything.

Well yeah...if you secure it it should be fine. Just do it in the car, it is safer.

You should be able to just put the fly wheel on ...put the starter in, and jump the solenoid. with no fuel it won't run, so you will be safe. Just make sure your engine stand can support the weight of the motor...
