Default code 214 rpm signal

nothing but trouble : P changed out the camshaft position sensor last week because my car was jerking and stalling every once in a while(and that was the code i pulled)...stopped jerking when i did that so i cleared out the codes. check engine light is off but i stalled out yesterday and once more today, only this time the car wouldn't start back right away. so i pulled the codes even though the light didnt come on and got 214...anyone know what i need to do next ? ?? please help : )

Does your tach work OK?

If so it could be a proximity problem between the RPM sensor wires and the coil wire. In its natural state the RPM sensor wires want to loop up near the coil / ignitionwires and the field from theignition wires can mess with the RPM sensor signal. The fix is cheap and easy, use a tye wrap and fold the RPM sensor wire down to keep it away from the ignition wires.

There was a TSB on it a few years ago.

A TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin, after the dealers get enough complaints about the same problem they send Sven back into theproduction lineto figure out what is wrong. Sven then tells them how to, as cheaply as possible, fix the problem and they issue a TSB.

Your RPM sensor is locatedjust below the distributor cap on the transmission bellhousing. Look at the proximity of those wires to any ignition wires and use a tye wrap to secure it, not to the engine where heat can damage it, away from any ignition wires.

If you need an even better manual than the Haynes for free try here:

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/dow.../Volvo_850.zip

The Haynes is a very useful companion and if you intend to work on the car I highly recommend that it be in your library - that said,it is limited.

Don't waste your money on a Chiltons.

so today car was worse than ever. "losing power/jerking every few feet or so" and died twice does anyone know if the fuel pump relay would cause this because i just bought a camshaft position sensor thinking that was it

Your symptoms are precisely those of the RPM sensor signal being interfered with. Did you tye wrap the wires back away from the ignition wires?

If you suspect the fuel pump relay you can jumper it to see. On the bottom of the relay (103) there are 4 terminals and molded into the plastic next to them you should be able see terminal numbers - 31, 31b, 87, and 15. Place a jumper wire in the socket positions associated with pins 87 and 15. If the car starts and runs OK after that the relay is failing and it is due to be rebuilt or replaced.

I'm betting on the RPM sensor wire and RF interference

well i tied back what i think is the right wire and if i got the right one it was very hard to get to underneath the dis. cap and the plug was right next to the camshaft position sensor plug. please let me know if that was the right one. i drove it and it seemed fine but it'ssuch an erratic problem who knows some days it's fine others not
thanks for helping i'll keep posting : )

I got mine for 1650 Eur, a very good condition 20 valve non-turbo station wagon with 170k Km. The guy had the engine error warning light removed from the dashboard, that's how 'smart' he is. After correcting the cause for error code 214 and two others it is working like a clock and pulling hard. Our Volvos are actually quite easy to fix, thanks everybody in this forum for the great help!
