Default Code diagnostic with a pc

Hello Fellow Enthusiasts, I would like to hook my laptop up to my 95 850 T5r to use as a diagnostic aid and perhaps retrieve codes and faults. Can somebody steer me in the right directionof what I would need to purchase. I have USB ports available on my laptop.

Thanks

I think you'll need more than USB ports.

For my OBD-II cars I use VOL-FCR software with the VAG COM (com port) cable. I'm sure they have a USB version as well . It is really close to the Volvo scan tool as far as being able to get to the systems that a standard code reader won't talk to such as SRS, ABS, ECC, etc. The bad news is that it sucks with engine codes. For engine codes I use an el cheapo US$49.00 - harbor freight - scan tool.

On your '95 you should (I'm not sure of the Aussie version model years - in Europe they were always a year ahead) have the under hood OBD-I A/B boxes that are actually more accurate.

Thanks for that,I went searching for a OBDII sticker or port, nothing.I do have the the a&b and LED under the hood. No Coin holder or OBDII port inside. The vehicle is a manual. Do they locate them anywhere else? The car was made april 95.Does the vehilce have theOBDI port? If so what can be done with this? Diagnostic? I recently took the care to a dealership and they cleared the codes for the airbag withsome tool. The Vin is YV1LS5802S224691, Volvo also told me, Type 854, Variant 8545890222, Speedo unit K, Gearbox 9121140, VCC type 854

That is the OBD-I port; A&B LED unit.

>Do they locate them anywhere else?

No.

Diagnostic?
1. The a & b with the leds you refer to under the bonnet are the Diagnostic Trouble Code units - all you'll ever need.
2. The unit fitted to your vehicle is OBD1 (i.e. 'On Board Diagnostic system, version 1).
3. Read all the fault codes your vehicle has registered and stored over time.
4. That is it's precise purpose - there's absolutely no other use for it.
