Code P0300 / Lucky quick fix
(96 glt n/a 117k) My son quickly lost acceleration 5 min. into a trip and nursed the car home on the highway, bucking, choking, and almost stalling especially when going up hills. He said it didn't seem to shift up. Cel on : code p0300 (random, multiple misfires) came up plus 301, 302, 303 & 304. I changed plugs, rotor & cap last year when p0300 came up under same circumstance, and I don't believe all the plug wires would go at once so I figuered coil or coil wire might be the cause this time. However, I remembered how my truck is sensitive to moisture in the gas tank, and we had damp, foggy weather this week. He said there was only a few gallons in the tank and it wasn't driven all week. I filled it with good gas (I like Shell), put fuel conditioner in and 5 miles down the highway after it smoothed out I cleared the codes. Put another 20 miles on it; very responsive never skipping a beat, running great.
Hope he learns a lesson: don't make a habit of keeping just a little, cheap gas in the tank (yes, he ponied up for the tankful !)
My lesson: continue to check the easy stuff first (plenty of time to curse later)
