Default Code P0300 and CEL

hi, we have a 1999 LPT and today after taking off at a light it stuttered, blew smoke and i could just crawl to a parking space right there.
there it stopped completely and wouldn't start again. after about 10 to 15 minutes it started again, still smoking, but getting better. the check engine light stayed on and now i hear a whirring/ticking/knocking noise from the engine - i had the codes read at it came up as "P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected". it seems to be running fine now, except for the noise from the engine.
does anybody know what this could be?
thanks
fritz

Maybe bad coils?
How old are the spark plugs?

i had it at the dealer yesterday to get the timing belt and everything changed - was scheduled anyway - and they can't really pin down the noise. tried a few things, but kind of prepared me for the worst - engine shot or about to......

i was told the minimum it could cost - if they find something soon - would be $1000, if i need a new engine that could be $8500 .......
that would unfortunately be the end of me being a c70 owner - i'm thinking of selling it as is right now [:@]

I had to do the same thing with a 95 850 Turbo. My engine was rapping pretty loud though. I sold it "as is" for $800 to the shop I had it towed to. That was 2.5 years ago and last time I looked it was still sitting there with some parts missing. In hindsight I wish I would have replaced the engine, but it had 206K on it.

it is running normaly now, except for that kind of rattling noise - should i look for an independent dealer to take a look at it (hopefully cheaper)? how much could it be to have the engine redone? aybody know anyone here in socal?

I would get a second opinion.

To bad it wasn't last weekend. I was in Myrtle beach I might have been able to look at it while I was there.

should have explained a little better what was done athe the volvo dealer, here it is:
>>> timing belt, tensioners, roller and water pump replaced - noise was still there
>>> performed compression test (all between 155 and 180), changed plugs - noise still there
>>> performed decarb service - noise still there

$2000 later - noise still there [:@]

the sound is almost like if something would be stuck in bicycle wheels and would make a noise when hitting the frame with each turn of the wheel. it is very pronounced while idling, if i rev it up to around 3000 you can't hear it for a moment, just when the revs go down again
thanks

I would start there if it is a lifter noise.

had it at 2 other places - specialized in european cars - and the verdict seems to be the lifters.
since we were thinking of getting a s60 anyway i think i will put it up for sale here in the classifieds and locally.
