Compressor Clutch?

Compressor Clutch?
I have a 95' 850 wagon.
The AC was cycling from cold air to warm as others on the forum have described. I took it in to the shop and they said that I had a leak in the evaporator which caused the refrigerant to go down and the compressor to cycle often, which lead to the magnetic clutch for the compressor to go bad. They said it would work but that as the clutch heated up from driving that it would stop working. They said that there was no way to tell how fast the leak on the refrigerant was, in order to get an idea for how long that would last, but I think that's out of the question anyways with a $900 price tag. They said they could replace just the clutch for $390 parts & labor.
Curious how all of this sounds to those in the know.

RE: Compressor Clutch?
I think it was about $600 parts and labor for a new compressor. They did present that as an option. I'm trying to keep the amount of money out to a minimum since I don't know how much longer I'll have the car in Florida AC might as well be a tranny. A must!
Does it all make sense though? I've had the car about a year now and know the previous owner and this is where he took the car and it's right next to my office so it's convenient. Every time I've taken the car in though, it's more than I bargained for. Just want to be sure it all sounds legitimate and priced within reason.
