Default Crap - more smoke

So I did my PCV system about 400 miles ago, and now I'm getting smoke coming out of my exhaust again. The smoke definitely has oil in it, because im getting a thin film of oil on the back window. I did a compression test on the motor and everything there is fine - even compression and right about where it should be numbers wise. It's a 1994 850 Turbo wagon. Is my turbo starting to die, or could it just be the oil seal, or something else?

if it is the turbo thats going, does anyone have one laying around that they'd part with for cheap? Especially a 16t or 18t? =)

Or, are they difficult to rebuild?

Make sure that's your problem first. Get under your car and check the turbo for oil. Pull it off, check for shaft play, check you intercooler hoses to see if they have oil in them. Maybe check your dp to see if there's any residue in there.

Try looking at the flame trap. My 850 N/A 10 valve blew smoke (read heaps) when power was applied eg: at the bottom of hills. I thought the engine was gone. I looked at the flame trap and presto, smoke gone.
I mentioed this to a Volvo wreckers and he admitted buying a few smoky 850's cheaply only to change out the flame trap. Hope this is of use to you.
Cheers,
Hoffa

Hoffa: the flame trap is part of the PCV system, which i changed about 400 miles ago. Wouldn't oil soaked hoses be a sign of a bad turbo seal? I know that the oil inlet on the turbo is bad, so maybe I pull the turbo off when I do that. Oil inside the turbo would be a sign of a bad seal, correct?

I rebuilt my turbo by following this procedure

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showpo...50&postcount=1

Mark the compressor fan so it goes back on the shaft with the same alignment and you don't have to get it rebalanced. I did mine alone, but it would be helpful to have an extra set of hands because when you tighten the fan nut the fan wants to turn on the shaft and the proper alignment is thrown off. I did it a few times before I got it perfect. Mine is boosting like there is no tomorrow with an MBC set just below fuel cutoff

You need a very big set of snap ring pliers.

This is the kit I used,

good kit, fast delivery and the price was right.
