Im hoping that this will get stickied as i notice a few people asking for the vacuum diagrams for volvo's so here is the link

hopefully it will work - if not just drop a message and ill post the diagram you need - you shouldnt have a problem though

nope still havent figured it out yet all new switches new relay replaced vacuum pump checked all lines and a new tur sig cruise switch
all no go im gonna pull all vacuum lines and replace them just to be sure i didnt miss sumthin - and i also think that i need to set all my switches again ------- any help or advice would be helpful at this point coz its really startin to **** ME OFF!!

I have a cruise control switch and everything on the steering wheel. No light comes on or anything. How do i tell if my car is really equipped with cruise control?

On mine the vacuum switch on the brake pedal was not pushing in all the way. Replaced the switch and away it went.

The module is mounted to the bottom of your battery tray.

All 850 Volvos were equiped with cruise. If you have the switch you have it. If it's not working you can check the cruise control write up in the DIY 850 Sticky. You can also check your owners manual or the one on-line to see how it works. It DOES NOT have a light.

Where is a VACUUM switch on the brake pedal? What does it look like? I'm starting to think my problem is the ignition switch.

I haven't looked but from the diagram there should be two switches on the brake pedal. One of them shows to have a vacuum line running to it

I'm just curious if Kkarasch has an 850 as I didn't think they had controls on the steering wheel? Unless he just means steering column (turn signal lever).

I knew about the brake plunger switch but did not realize that there was another switch on there. When it stops raining, I guess I'll drop my panel and check that out. Wonder if it's the same part # for most 850's, S70's, etc.

Be extremely careful if you decide to remove the switch. There are two tabs that break really really easy. I cleaned out our local wreckers switches before I got one successfully out. If I remember I was looking at 850's and S70's and the switch was the same.

Well, my cruise went from working 70% of the time to 30% of the time to now, not at all. Hopefully this info will help me.

There was a few other things making me think the ignition had something to do with it. Sometimes when I start the car, maybe 1 out of 10 times, the temp gauge will not register until a minute or two into driving. Also, about 1 in 20 times the same will happen to the fuel gauge.

So this doesn't even make sense. The first thing I did was feel and look at the vacuum lines at the cruise pump on the bottom of the battery trey. They looked great. Next I replaced the cruise controller next to the fuel pump relay, that didn't help. So I decided that I would go through the trouble shooting steps in the 850 PDF for the cruise. I read through it and the next step I decided to take was to check the accelerator pedal vacuum ball and the vacuum line there. As soon as I dropped the kick panel and looked at it I seen my problem. The linkage to the vacuum ball from the top of the accelerator pedal was disconnected. It has a linkage similar to the throttle body linkage and it was loose. When I snapped it in place it seemed worn like it would come loose easy and sure nuf it did. So I got some wire ties and supported it with that. Took the car around the block and it set and held 33 mph like it had to.


What I don't understand is, why would my cruise work at all with that disconnected? It has a swivel at the connection and what seems like a micro switch that makes a ground when you let off the gas. The grounded connection cuts the system off like the brake switch does. When the gas pedal is pressed the connection is lost and the cruise will set. What I don't understand is... why did my cruise work at all with that disconnected? Maybe there was certain times that it was making connection or my system has a problem that the pedal was not cutting it off. Maybe the control relay had something to do with it but I'm up and running again.

Another example of how reliable the components are. Bad vacuum like or linkage can cause it not to work and the other things that cost money work.
