Cupholders Suck
My crotch works perfectly for holding drinks for me. But, if it's a cold drink, you may need to wrap several napkins arouns the drink before sitting it there, otherwise you may have issues walking when you arrive at your destination...
I bought a Thermos cup where the bottom is the size of a 12 oz. can and get's wider at the top. Fits perfect, but it only holds 16 oz. 32 oz. drink it too big to drink while driving a car. haha. Actually is sit's nicer between the emergency brake and the seat than in that flimsy cup holder. Carried it that way for years when I had a 94 w/o the cup holder.
Quality vs. Quantity.
Just because Volvo can put a ton of cup holders in a car doesn't make them well designed.
The cup holders on the 850 were an afterthought for the US market, hence the poor placement over the window controls. The were also designed back in 93 before we had so many huge cups. A final note is that most european drivers don't care about cup holders and infact they were surprised when American's started putting them on cars, they thought you should be driving, not drinking.

I agree. I have a 93 850 GLT and those cup holders are the cheesiest things I've ever seen.
I place my S.S. coffee go mug in my lap, but sometimes the handle rotates around and jams the steering wheel..........usually at the most inopportune time! However, us serious coffee drinkers will persevere.

Cold drinks would be the same way.
I've also noticed that they fit cans perfect, but they aren't deep enough so there is potential for the can to spill.
