Deleting turbo for junk car race
Now before anybody gets upset, our 850 still runs but burns about a quart of oil a week and has dents in every possible panel already.
The familiy 850 has seen better days...so we were going to scrap it but it runs so i was going to enter it in the local Junk car race. I have done these before so i know the rules, and one of the rules is NO TURBO CARS.
So i have a call into the rule committe to see if i can just disconnect the turbo, or if they would require it to be removed. If i dont need to remove it, can i just disconncet the charge line, make sure the wastegate stays open, and replumb the intake manifold to the air filter?
If i need to remove the turbo, i guess ill need a non turbo manifold, but what do i do with the oil and coolant lines. Can i just plug them, or do they need to make a loop to cool/lubricate the rest of the motor?
Also with the turbo disconnected will it be in super limp barely crawing mode? My dads saab had the wastegate actuator arm fall off, and it ran fine with no lights, just no boost, can i expect that?
Thanks,
Kendrick

Oil lines should be connected to each other / looped. This is a high pressure line (max at 45 psi). Make sure you use transmission cooler hose. Regular heater hose will bust in seconds.
If you disconnect the turbo, I think the car will move, but I am not sure which way.

Im not completely sure why they do not allow turbos, maybe it is out of fear of modern technology. The rules are based around big blocks three ton beasts so if your driving a foreign car you might as well be a terrorist. Going to the race is an eye opening experience for an out-of-towner and is a good stage to view the slice of America that buy engagement rings at Wal-Mart and drinks P.B.Rs. So for me, a college educated twenty something who grew up in a semi-redneck environment, i love it.
I have to talk to the rule committee but i think the no-turbo rule is two-fold. They dont want a chunk of iron that glows red anywhere on a car that will be slamming into other cars that will more easily start a fire than a hot manifold. And the other assumption is that they made a blanket rule thinking all turbocharged cars make too much power, which doesnt make any sense because the 220 HP volvo is still goin to be in the rink with 350 HP old American beasts. But that being said the organization puts on a very safe and well run event, and of the 5 times i have been there i never saw anybody get hurt.
So i will just disconnect the wastegate rod just to see how the car performs without the turbo to see if it even worth spending all this time on. I do believe that it would excel though in the race, it will be sturdy enough to last but nimble enough to avoid the tanks

I like this idea, it wouldnt be too dificult to fab a downpipe or just run it open since there is no care for the car, it would be fun and loud.
could you get lost?
you are in violation of volvo forum bullying policy . get lost ? think not kiddo ! i will be on everyday . kiddo ! senior member only means you pay ! thank you for letting me know that i'm truly needed here ,pal . GFY ! get it ?
