drove thru water; rough running; no start
perhaps i took the joke of this car being a boat a little to literally.
leaving a parking lot yesterday i was driving towards a long puddle of what i believed to be be a few inches of water. much to my dismay, it turned out to be several inches of water. as in a foot deep, maybe a few inches deeper at the deepest point. puddle (or maybe lake is a better term here) was about 80 feet long. about halfway through when i realzed how deep it was getting, i layed into the gas to get myself out asap. i was scared stopping to turn around would take too long and i'd get completely stuck. about three quarters of the way out, all the dashboard lights came on (which has happened when driving through regular puddles in the past, ususally they shut off after a couple seconds, so it didn't worry me too much). few seconds later the engine started driving and idling pretty rough. hoping it would burn up and kick out any water that made it in the cylinders, i drove it about a thousand feet further, to no avail. pulled over, let it sit a minute, tried starting it a few times, but it sounded uneven and rough. like it was on the cusp of starting and then got bogged down, over and over. got it towed the home.
pulled air filter. a little damp but not water logged. some water in the textured recesses of the bottom of the air filter case, but not on the lid. pulled the plastic spark plug cover, sopped up some water with paper towel, pulled spark plugs and rotated engine, no water shot out. looked into the cylinders, only two seemed to have a little glistening when i shined the light in. maybe water, maybe gas from rotating the engine, idk. let it sit with a fan overnight. put spark plugs back in this morning, starter was cranking just as bad as last night. checked compression w a harbor freight tester, so take my results w a grain of salt. left to right, I got:
(1995 850 GLT N/A)
Cylinder 1: 180
Cylinder 2: 150
Cylider 3: 195
Cylinder 4: 180
Cylinder 5: 157
forums are all over the place with what is acceptable for these cars, from 120-150 to 190-210. also, couldn't tell you what they were before the puddle, but this car has been through three first time drivers, so maintenence wasn't always done on time.
not quite sure where to go from here honestly. is the compression done for? killed the ecu? starter needs changing? the water caused a timing belt slip (and if so wouldnt that have grenaded the engine since it's an interference engine)? should i check if there's codes?
Much Obliged,
Carl
