Dying Turbo?
I have a 95' 850-T and when ever i try to accelerate quickly it seems as if the turbo just stops working. when i floor it, it is fine until i get to about 3500 rpm and then the turbo just like stops then it starts going again until it reaches about 4500 rpm and then it does the same thing. I was wondering if the turbo is just dying because it is too old or is something wrong with my transmission and it slipping one the gears. If my turbo is dying is there anyway to fix it, or do i just have to replace it?
Greetings from Chicagoland.
If the turbo is providing boost intermittently, then it is probably not dead. As Mr. Tech states, check for hoses/loose clamps.
Within a turbo charger, turbine and turbine-to-compressor bearing are facing the highest stress (heat & centrifugal force). The best thing you can do to protect a turbocharger is to use high-quality, name brand engine oil (preferably synthetic/synthetic blend oil). Also, after high-speed/hard driving, let the engine idle for 4-5 minutes before shut down to cool the bearing.
I believe you wouldn't have to replace the turbo. If there is a damage, it is usually seized bearing/bent turbine or compressor blades, but in you case it doesn't sound either.
Double check all turbo connections for leaks/loose clamps.
