Default ECU upgrades

I have a 95 turbo. Will the ESC from a Turbo R work in my car? Will it increase performance any?

I looked into getting my ESC chipped/flashed/remapped and @ $400ish it isnt gonna happen for me. Just to far out of my budget.

I did!
Even just tried searching for "ECU"....got NO results. I dont mean no related results, I mean it gave me no results at all.

Anyway, is the swap "plug and play"? Is it something I can do without making other changes?
How will the "R" ecu run the car? Does it change engine settings only, or also control the trans?

also, mine is a 95....do I need a 95' R ecu, or will one from a 96-97 R work as well?

nevermind that last question.
a google search did come up with some stuff.
seems I can only use a 94-95 R ecu.

What I found claims 20hp increase. says it does this mainly by increasing boost. I thought the wastegate controled boost level?

I found an R ecu on ebay for $150. Im sure the ecu tuning would add more than that, but again I cant spend $400.
to me, 20hp for $150 and a plug and play install sounds pretty good.

I guess I need to look for a ECU with # 628...but it also has to be one from a 95 cause the later models also had this number but will not work on the 95' ?

you can use a 96-97 ecu which i have a 97 IPD stage 1 ecu in my 95 turbo wagon the only major difference is the 96-97 dont use the egr so you can actually block it off

What is the EGR? How would I block it off.

I may have to do this as it seems the 96-97 R ecu's are much easier to find.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, not really needed, just emissions stuff. to block it off you would just have to plug the intake or get a 96-97 and plug the exhaust manifold with a bolt or something or just leave it be it wont cause any issues the ecu just doesnt look for it anymore

Exactly what Matt (91Shelby) said. The tuned ECU he's running came out of my '97 850R and like Matt said, all you have to do is block off the EGR and your good to go.

Now if you want to get more aggressive then just using an R ECU, look at going with an ARD tune. Ardideas.com

OK, besides the ECU does the "R" have any other mechanical differences from my car?
If not, then when I get the "R" ecu installed...Ill need some "R" badges

An R is the exact same car as a T5. Only difference is slightly higher boost (by like 2 or 3 psi), bumper, and interior.

And put in an R ECU, but please do not put R badges on your car. It's not an R. It would be like putting T5 badges on an NA.

so, T5 refers to my turbo wagon? I thought there was the turbo, then the T5 then the R.

Ill put on "R" badge anyway. Its not like putting a turbo badge on a NA, that would be lame. If my car will perform 98% like an "R" with the R ecu then I see no reason I cant pretend I bought an "R".
Believe me, I would have dished out alittle extra cash for an "R" in the 1st place. But it was hard enough to find a turbo wagon, let alone a turbo "R" wagon.

Turbo and T5 are the exact same engine/ECU. They just changed the badge in 95 or 96.

R's don't have an R badge because of the ECU, they have an R badge because they're a limited production car, a "collector's item" if you will. That's why it would be even more lame to put an R badge on a plain jane 850. I have an R bumper on my 850 with a 22 psi Stage III tune which will out-perform the **** out of an R, but I don't have a R badge on it.

I mean, do what you want, it's your car, I'm just saying, the R badge is somewhat sacred amongst enthusiasts because of the rarity of the car, and putting an R badge on a non-R is like offensive.

well it seems a null point, as "R" badges seem hard to find. at least I found none on ebay.

so, what about those who put "R" rims on their T5? Is that not a simillar thing?

I bought some eyelids...and a S70 day time running light conversion kit. should make the front end look sharper

They're just wheels. They're not R wheels. They're Pegasus wheels that came on the R. There's also Volans, Titans, Meteors, all of which came on R models. You're changing the model of the car to something it's not. Do whatever you want.

You're missing the point. I'm not going to argue it, it's dumb. Putting badges on your car when it's not same car. I mean, how does it sound like a good idea. If you buy a Chevy, and you put Ford floormats in it, do you put Ford badges on it?

And what day time running light conversion kit did you buy? Never heard of that.
