EGR or not
This might sound dumb, but what benefit do you get by removing the EGR? I know they are a pain and have gunk up problems. I was just wondering if I should get rid of mine.
there really is no benefit or loss from it, the only thing is that to get rid of it, you have to custom make blanking plates, and then you will get a CEL because you computer will be looking for an egr and it won't be there.
I am not sure about Volvos in general on this, but I know that many cars rely on the EGR system to keep exhaust valve temperatures down and prevent them from getting burned. I know that a number of vehicles are susceptible to valves burning if the EGR system isn't working, and that some of those cars rely partly on the backpressure from the catalytic converter to help open the EGR valve. I had a friend with an old POS Grand Am that I fixed burned valves on 3 times- all 3 times, we had the head sent to a machine shop to be redone (this was YEARS ago!) before I found out that the catalytic converter had been "cleaned," I.E. emptied out, and that that was preventing the EGR from opening. Once we put a cat on again, he stopped having trouble with it burning valves. So...at least on some cars, the EGR system is VERY important, and definitely doesn't hurt anything.
Oh boy, now I am not sure. I just pulled the head do to a burnt valve, but tech said to run premo in the tank to avoid future issues. Not doubting, you tech, just wondering.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
