Engine Just stopped running
Im not sure if thats a lot . I havent gotten one done yet so. If you can afford it, and he is definatley sure thats your problem, i would say go ahead. However, if the timing belt broke, it is likely that the valves are bent, so you are still taking a chance dishing out $600.
The mechanic will tell you that he will only be able to tell if the valves are bent after putting the new timing belt on. In other words, he may change everything but the engine will not run because of bent valves. Hopefully someone else on this forum can expalin better.

Did the timing belt break or is it just bad? If it broke, you need more than just a new timing belt because you will have bent valves and possibly a damaged head. But with the coolant leaking out it may just be that the water pump went bad and he is saying you need a new timing belt. That is best case scenario.
What has me confused though it the no compression issue. A bad timing belt and water pump will not cause a loss of compression. A broken timing belt causing bent valves would cause a loss of compression. I would not pay this guy to replace the timing belt and water pump if the timing belt broke, because he's going to do that and then tell you you need more done because the broken belt caused more damage. I would be getting it to somebody who specializes in Volvo's if I were you.

Well I decided to take the car to the Volvo dealership. As soon as this other shop said this was the first Volvo he worked on I called the tow truck company. The main reason I went to this guy is all the deals I got from him before.
As of right now the car is at the Volvo dealership and tomorrow I get the final assessment.
I'll keep you in touch.
The only thing that bother me is I bought the car 5 months ago for $3000 with 350,000km
and now I might have no engine. DAMMIT

Hi xps,
Greetings from Vermont.
I was wondering as to where the coolant leaked. When the engine stopped, did you hear metallic clashing or unusual noise from the engine? If the timing belt broke while driving, yes the valves & piston tops have been damaged and you'll have to get a new/rebuilt head, unless you can find a used engine for similar cost.
Well, after all your car is sitting at the dealer, which is a good thing (may not be good on the wallet/bank account[:@], but if you think of it, you're not hurt or collided into another car).
Many drivers neglect scheduled maintenance until it's too late, so I assume there are many others who've had similar problem. Also, it was good that you left the first guy. Even though working on Volvos isn't a rocket science, certain procedures must strictly be followed or the car will not run right. This is why I've been telling people to use Volvo dealer or specialised shops. They charge more indeed, but you get what you pay for. Also, friends' recommendations on shops is almost always useless, unless he/she has some knowledge on cars.
I'm sorry for burbling, I know it won't do any good at this point. I only hope the repair is minor.
P.S: "seized" is the correct spelling.

I must agree I’m happy I left and went to the Volvo dealership as well. I'm just pissed off here cause the car had a 90 days warranty and this happened in the 118 day. Inspections should have seen the wear in that belt but I guess they missed it. Kind of odd how one day your running fine and the next your engine just stops on you. If it's any consulation I was driving maybe 20kn/h and drove like 5 city blocks. How does an engine seize in that time IT WAS -35 DEGRESS OMG.
sorry that me pissed of LOL
Really though what does one do, I really can't say scrap it I just paid $3000 for it 118 days ago, but does one really want to put $1500 into a car that has 360,000km?
I'm so confused and stressed out right now; I don't think I ever felt like this before.

Just relax man. It's just a car and nothing more. If it's at a Volvo dealership, it's in good hands. You also might have some recourse against where you bought it, if it's only been 118 days. The Volvo shop might be able to help you in that regard also. If a dealer sold you a car and the timing belt broke 118 days later, they have some responsibility. As soon as you find out what happened, you need to inform the dealer that you bought it from. Where do you live?
Hi xps,
I've had similar problems in the past, and I assume many others have been there & done that. Engines generally seize due to loss of oil/overheating. The internal parts get red-hot and eventually bind together.
If you didn't hear metallic clash from the engine bay at the time of stoppage, it may not have been T-belt failure. It is impossible to say, though, without actually looking at the car.I agree withJim that whoever sold you the car didn't seem knowledgeable or scrupulous. T-belt is one of the top priorities in 850 inspection.
Whether the car is worth new/rebuilt head/engine really depends on the overall condition. If there is not much corrosion/damage on the undercarriage (body, suspension, steering, etc...), the car may deserve a new head/engine. If not, it may not be worth new head/engine.
This may be none of my business, but for your future benefits, I would start learning the basics about cars. You'll be surprised how simple some mechanisms & repair/maintenance procedures are, including the T-belt replacement (though this one requires attention to detail & appropriate service instructions). By knowing more aboutcars, there is less chance of getting taken/ripped-off and you would feel safer & morecomfortable as well, let alone the amount of$CDN you can save on labour. Visit a bookstore, go through several books and buy just one book that fits your tastes,or the one that is written simple enough to understand.
We'll wait for your reply and hope that the repair is not serious.

You're welcome
Best wishes,

Not yet man... I called today but they didn't have a chance to bring it in the shop. Amazing shape huh!!! I'm only the third owner LOL The first was a lease, second was an old lady and she never drove it really, and them me. Now look what happens. You know I was surprisingly depressed when this initially happened, and almost too depressed. I never realized how my life revolved around this car. WOW pretty crazy stuff. Thank god I work from home doing my sales and marketing. Serious tho have you ever seen a better looking NORTH American Volvo at 360,000kms
OK guys looks like I got some good news. There still not sure if the Head and valves are done, but heres the deal if they are done. $600.00 Canadian dollars for the new/refurbished heads and valves this is including installation and labor. $100.00 for the water pump and $60.00 for the timing belt/Tensioner. He said after all is done were looking at $900.00 to $1000.00 Canadian for all the work.
What does that convert to in American dollars? To have a Volvo shop do my head when I had the burnt valve, it would have been around $3,000 american dollars. If I would have just bought a rebuild head from the dealer $1500 for just the head and the gaskets and boltswere another $500.
well 600 Canadian is like 800 American, so I guess I'm getting an amazing deal here I don’t know!!!
They said even worse case scenario I would only pay 1000 Canadian which is about 1300 American
Worse case is, Blown Heads and bent Valves... New water pump and Timing Belt with tensioner
get back to me

WOW GOOD DEAL.
I will bet you $100.00 that the valves are bent(Not really though about the bet)
But I will bet they are bent.
If the belt broke or jumped off they are bent.

Hi guys Long time no talk to. I had to come visit and let you know the CRAP I have been through. First of all you should look at the date when I first started this topic and that when I first brought my car to the shop in where it was purchased. Yep it's been this long without a vehicle, almost 9 weeks
I called last week to see if I could get my car back I was told to #*^* off or he would shoot my car out, come to my home and punch me in the face. So I did what anyone in their right mind after 9 weeks and threatening gestures would do, I called the police and had him charged with verbal assault. Well the next day, "today" I got a call saying Brian your car is ready LOL what an **** face. I can't believe the crap I've been through. day after day, excuse after excuse. So the total cost of all the repairs came to $1275.54 Canadian for an engine re build. Yes I know this is a good deal but not good enough to wait 9 weeks omg
