Fixed tranny problem
I thought my tranny was going out because I had what I would describe as a "bumpy downshift" when I stomped on it and activated the kickdown shift. I didn't have any slippage, the fluid was clean, and there were no
CEL Lights.
I finally figured it out: it was the tranny and rear engine mounts were shot. When the rubber is ripped and/or worn out it lets the engine and tranny rock under the stress of acelleration.
A real easy fix, especially the front drivers side tranny mount a ten minute job and a $32 part at Groten.
The upper engine mount is a little tricky. After you disconnect the upper bolt, engine side, you remove the rear bolts on the firewall (14mm) . wiggle the bridge out. Then use a hacksaw blade to cut the old bushing out. You will soon find that no matter what you do cant get new one in because it constantly slips sideways. What you need to do is: 1. Lube it up with the secret ingredient: Dawn Dish Soap. Make a puller using a long bolt or a lenght of threaded rod. Secure the bolt or rod through one of those oil filters that look lile a big bottle cap put a large washer 2" on the other end and draw down the nut on thread all or bolt and it will slide in laterally with just a little effort.
After I replaced these two bushings the whole car handled and shifted better.
